Wantirna Estate Lily pinot noir 2021
A veritable potpourri of aromas to fill the nostrils! Small red fruits, spices, lavender, black tea and even a little hedgerow. A touch richer on the palate than the 2020, and maybe a touch more structured, too. It's a moot point as it'll probably be sold out by the time you read this. Those that do snag some have plenty to look forward to. 97

A gorgeous wine from the outset, this is seductive and perfumed with aromas of red fruits intermingled with violets, jasmine and a little forest floor just starting to emerge. A subtle touch of wood-derived sweet spice, too. As good on the palate it is an essay in elegance. Delicate and refined but equally this has depth and persistence. No one who manages to get their hands on a bottle will be disappointed. 97

2018 Wantirna Estate Lily Pinot Noir
Deepish, bright red/purple hue, the palate dry and savoury, strong and rich and sustained. The structure is solid and firm, the tannins lingering long on the farewell, in balance with the flavour. A big-flavoured and structured pinot which has muscle and staying power. Impressive, concentrated, and here for the long-haul. HH

Raspberry, strawberry, vanilla, dried roses and general gorgeous fragrance. Ripe poached strawberry, light spice, fine dusty tannin, earthy and savoury, in among pretty red fruits. Orange peel twist on a nice long finish. It’s generous and warm-hearted this year, yet manages to keep itself lovely.

The exact, fragrant allure of the most gorgeous red cherry fruit that excludes from this drop-dead gorgeous pinot is utterly haunting. Rose petal nuances complete a delightfully fragrant and ethereal style of eloquent fruit purity underlined by soft, fine and silky tannins and bright acid line. It's irresistible from the outset, with medium term promise.

The charm-factor of this 2016 release of Lily Pinot Noir is right up there. Many things are teachable; charm not so much.
A complex nose. A silken palate. An even slide of flavour through the finish. And just enough scaffolding to suggest longevity. This is a 2016 pinot noir made with a gentle hand. A wise wine. Cherries, plums, cream, an assortment of blooms, fennel root, a hint of forest floor. It’s a pretty wine but not in a breezy way; it has its own style, and substance.

Musky rose and spice perfume, red cherry and raspberry, cedar and toast. Medium bodied, and light in frame an elegant in red fruit flavour, but served with substantial Turkish coffee tannin that coats and coasts on to the long finish. Acidity is just right, and it feels serious, and playful at once. Delightful. Needs a couple of years more in bottle I'd say. 95

Wantirna Estate Lily 2014
I haven't seen much of Wantirna in recent years but this reminds me of their best wines from the past. Pinot from Wantirna, as I recall, is always fragrant, set on fine tannins, delivers fruit flavour effortlessly but with complexity and delicacy in hand. No disappointment.
It'll hook you from the perfume, and there's just so much volume of fragrance to dig into. Red cherries, cranberry, musk, faint meatiness, sandalwood, faint graphite. Man, so pretty. In the palate, just ripe red fruit flavours, delicate herbal note, pomegranate acidity, lick of pleasing bitterness in the long, long finish. Some fleshiness to the wine but those lacy yet firm ropes of tannin keep the wine tight. It's such a pleasure. Hedonism and strictness hand-in-hand. Beautiful.

Wantirna Estate Lily 2012
Deeply floral, with a heady, rose garden perfume backed by penetrative cherry, berry aromas, spicy oak and a hint of dried herbs. It’s long and generous, with layers of intense, faintly confectionary berry, cherry and plum-like fruit, silky tannins and beautifully integrated oak deliveredwith the utmost restraint and gentleness, building intensity and structure towards its long, fresh and savoury finish. Superbly crafted and balanced.

The colour is light and bright. The restrained aromas remind of cherry pastilles with some earthy, savoury, and dusty barrel aged characters. Medium bodied and smooth with a nice harmony between savoury flavours and fruit succulence. Good persistence; a lovely wine.

Wantirna Estate Lily pinot noir 2009
In general the 2009 vintage is one to be avoided from the Yarra Valley but Wantirna Estate is (almost) Yarra Valley in name only. I was on the alert for signs of smoke taint in this wine but saw none whatsoever.
It’s a beautiful wine to drink, regardless of vintage. It tastes of cherries and rose petals and swish, cedary, spicy oak, though it comes across as silken and seamless. There’s an undercurrant of ripe tannin but it’s not assertive. It’s refreshing and lengthy. There’s some fresh new oak through the aftertaste but it’s a positive here; this is a thoroughly enjoyable, delicious wine of clear class.

Wantirna Estate Lily pinot noir 2009
A delightfully elegant pinot of purity, refinement and succulent red fruits. A perfumed bouquet dances with rose petals, red cherries and ripe strawberries. These carry through the palate amid a silky sheet of fine, even tannins. Not the slightest suggestion of challenging vintage here.
