How much encouragement do I need to open and taste a new release of chardonnay? Exactly none.

This powerful release from Wantirna Estate is a wine of presence. It’s all slim-line white peach and nectarine for the most part – and boasts a nice slip of creamy, spicy oak – but as you swallow it becomes all insistent and intense. It’s highly refined and yet there’s something warm and showy about it too. It’ll be even better once it’s had time to build flesh. Rated : 93+ Points

Wantirna Estate’s cabernet blend is all about elegance and class; there’s nothing blockbuster-ish to be found here.

That said, this cabernet is open for business, and can easily be enjoyed now. It’s superbly well balanced and beautifully ripe. The combination of flavours: olives and dried herbs, nuts and blackcurrant, perhaps some game. Nothing feels forced or out of place; it’s an harmonious wine. And a juicily refreshing one too. Both to smell and to drink; this wine is beautiful.

In general the 2009 vintage is one to be avoided from the Yarra Valley but Wantirna Estate is (almost) Yarra Valley in name only. I was on the alert for signs of smoke taint in this wine but saw none whatsoever.

It’s a beautiful wine to drink, regardless of vintage. It tastes of cherries and rose petals and swish, cedary, spicy oak, though it comes across as silken and seamless. There’s an undercurrant of ripe tannin but it’s not assertive. It’s refreshing and lengthy. There’s some fresh new oak through the aftertaste but it’s a positive here; this is a thoroughly enjoyable, delicious wine of clear class. Rated : 93+ Points
